Landfill

Part of the landfill process involves environmental monitoring. This usually requires the testing of groundwater and for landfill gas on a monthly or quarterly basis. If on site, surface waters will also need monitoring. All this will be stipulated in your Waste Management Licence (WML) or PPC Permit.

We can carry out all you WML monitoring requirements at a very competitive rate.

At pearl we also carry out monitoring in order to surrender a WML. For an old landfill, a WML surrender involves a complex ground water environmental risk assessment. This is carried out over a minimum of 2 years with groundwater testing every quarter. Boreholes are drilled into the site to obtain the groundwater. See here for a surrender case study.

Inert landfill

It may not be the case that you actually need a PPC permit to run an inert 'landfill'. If the purpose of the 'landfill' is for restoration then you may only need a WML (this is cheaper and quicker to get than a PPC permit). If the 'landfill' is in connection with a recreational facility or a road construction etc then a WML exemption can be applied for. This is by far the quickest and cheapest method of using inert waste. An exemption requires no environmental monitoring.

Example costs would be:
PPC permit£70,000
WML £25,000
WML exemption £3,000

We can assess your site and see which category your 'landfill' falls into. If we work with you at the planning stage we can work towards ob taining a WML exemption for your site.
